Addiction Management Q&A

What is addiction management?

Addiction management at Legacy Advanced Nursing Practice is a comprehensive service addressing the physical and psychological effects of addiction.

You develop an addiction when alcohol or drugs affect your brain, changing the way it functions and making it rely on the addictive substance. Addictions also affect how you think, feel, behave, and interact with others.

Addictions are chronic conditions that can’t be cured. Instead, dealing with the daily habits that may lead to a relapse is essential. That’s where addiction management comes in.

Addiction management gives you the health care and support you need to detox, recover, and lead a healthy life.

What are the signs I need addiction management?

Early signs can alert you to a substance use problem, and if you recognize them and seek help, you may prevent an addiction. The earliest signs include:

  • Unable to stop using the substance
  • Isolating yourself from family and friends
  • Constantly thinking about your substance
  • Putting yourself at risk to get your substance
  • Skipping responsibilities at school or work
  • Developing physical signs (red eyes, weight loss, lethargy, nausea, and jittery hands)

Should you miss the early signs, you'll still have three red flags warning that you have developed a dependency or addiction:

  1. Having uncontrollable urges
  2. Needing a larger dose to get the same results
  3. Having withdrawal symptoms

Don’t wait to seek outpatient treatment at Legacy Advanced Nursing Practice if you have any of these symptoms.

What treatments will I receive through addiction management?

At Legacy Advanced Nursing Practice, Tyisha offers holistic and compassionate addiction management. Though she customizes your treatment, it includes two foundational therapies:

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT)

Tyisha prescribes medications that are approved for the outpatient (at-home) treatment of opioid and alcohol addictions. The medication you receive supports a safe detox and recovery by preventing withdrawal symptoms and cravings and restoring the chemical balance in your brain.

Behavioral therapy

Behavioral therapy is an essential part of your treatment and is required if you’re on MAT. Talk therapy builds the foundation for a successful life away from drugs and alcohol.

Therapy gives you the tools to manage the habits, emotions, and situations tempting you to start using your substance again. You can also get help for any other life challenges caused by your addiction, whether you struggle with relationships or have difficulty sleeping.
